The hardest part about exercise and nutrition isn’t knowing what to do. That’s pretty easy: you can buy a magazine or subscribe to an app or search YouTube.
The hardest part is showing up.
We procrastinate. With all day to do stuff, we say “I’ll do it later”–and get less done than ever before. Life gets busy!
We wait for the perfect time–even though the perfect time was yesterday.
We know too much and do too little–we can argue about why sit-ups are bad, but we can’t do a single one without fatiguing almost immediately–if we finish one at all.
We try to find the perfect workout–even though there isn’t one. Although, have you ever tried Fran?
We buy stuff for our basement–and then sell it cheap the next year. (For the record, Mark, I LOVED my magnetic rower.)
I’m guilty too. I’m guilty of all of it.
What gets me great fitness results? It’s not my hardcore attitude (lol) or my genetics (sorry, parentals) or my extreme passion for feeling pain (excuse me?). It’s this:
“Hey Shannon, I’ll be at noon class today. What are you up to?”
More than anything else, that’s what keeps me fit.
Here’s another one:
“You coming to work on back squats today?”
That was from a friend via text, a couple months after I had our daughter Charlie, and she knew I hadn’t started lifting again.
“What time are we going for a walk?”
That’s my youngest two, every day. Every. Day. I firmly believe children are invincible and don’t notice the next hill on our route.
This was from my nutrition coach:
“Hey, happy Sunday. I see you didn’t enter your meals for Friday or Saturday – what’s going on?”
I told her I went to a birthday party and ate a lot of party food. She responded, “OK, drink a glass of water and log your food for today.”
So I did. She knew the accountability is what I needed to not spiral for a few days.
How can I best focus on fitness?
It’s not the bike in my garage.
It’s not the program at my gym.
It’s not the motivation in my head.
It’s not the vegetables in my fridge.
It’s not the equipment in my gym.
It’s the people I have in my life.
We own CrossFit 7070 to give people in the Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs, Palmer Lake, Larkspur, Castle Rock, Elizabeth, Monument, Black Forest, Kings Deer, and Woodmoor area (you all come from everywhere!) the value of all of this coaching, equipment, and buddy-support. The coaches are incredible. We have so much equipment! But the REAL value is in the other people in the gym.
If you’re nervous, we’ll help you.
If you do something for the first time, we’ll celebrate with you.
If you don’t show up, I will likely text you.
You don’t have to buy pre-workout drinks or listen to “pump-up music” or slap yourself in the face to work out at CrossFit 7070, although a healthy appreciation for Eminem and Pitbull is suggested. Ha! The motivation is built in: fun workouts, compounding results, and great people.
